ESSO Award Session: Education in Cancer Surgery

About the Award: The ESSO Society Award is presented in recognition of remarkable investment towards the development of a comprehensive core curriculum for the specialist training in surgical oncology within Europe, the upgrading of the surgical oncology exam and enthusiastic lead in expanding the offer of educational courses for surgical oncologists.

 

RECIPIENT: Lynda Wyld

Lynda Wyld was trained as a surgeon in Sheffield, Nottingham, Leeds and Manchester in the UK. She spent a period of time in full time research at the University of Sheffield where she studied for her PhD. 
Lynda Wyld currently works as a Senior Lecturer in Surgical Oncology at the University of Sheffield in the UK following her appointment in 2002. Her main areas of clinical interest are breast cancer, breast reconstruction and sarcomas. Her main research interests are primary hormonal therapy for elderly women with breast cancer, breast screening in the elderly and stress response pathways in cancer.  

Lynda Wyld was invited to join the Education and Training Committee of ESSO in 2007 and became Chair of the Committee in September 2012. In this function, she initiated and led the development of the ESSO Core Curriculum for the specialist training in surgical oncology within Europe and expanded the portfolio of ESSO live educational courses.
Moreover, Lynda Wyld is Chair of the Division of Surgical Oncology of the European Board of Surgery within the UEMS (European Union of Medical Specialists) and in this capacity leads the jointly organised ESSO-EBS examination in Surgical Oncology (EBSQ), which she has completely revamped and improved. In 2014, the examination successfully passed the Exam Quality control and validation by the CESMA (The Council for European Specialists Medical Assessment). 
Lynda Wyld is also actively contributing to the writing of a textbook of surgical oncology in line with the ESSO core curriculum, which will serve as a reference material for candidates to the surgical oncology exam. 
Lynda Wyld is incoming President of the British Association of Surgical Oncology (BASO).
