Introducing our Social Media Committee!

The European Cancer Congress 2013 is rapidly approaching. Our Congress is a unique collaboration between seven leading cancer organisations in Europe. It provides a really powerful message about our community’s determination to maximise the multidisciplinary approach to achieve the best possible outcomes for cancer patients.

At ECCO, we are also committed to further facilitating interaction with and between all our Members. That is why we are establishing a strong base of contacts through social media to foster serious discussion on oncology and healthcare issues that arise at the Congress.

We have recruited some social media talents from amongst our oncology community to help us organise the dialogue before, during after the meeting to help participants get the most out of the experience.  This group will help us build community and spread the key messages from the ECC 2013 through creating real-time, very information-rich discussions.

We are extremely proud of the fact that the ECC 2013 is already very lively on Twitter and that our social media network is helping us to spread the word about this multidisciplinary meeting through different social channels. We want to take this further, by playing our part in transforming one-to-one communication into a one-to-many setup to create connections that are less likely to happen offline.

Jan is the Director of the ‘European Patients Academy on Therapeutic Innovation’ (EUPATI), a project funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (Public Private Partnership of EU Commission and EFPIA). EUPATI will develop educational material and training courses to educate patient representatives and the lay public about all processes of medicines R&D. He is also a cancer survivor and co-founder of a number of patient advocacy organisations, e.g. the CML Advocates Network.

Name: Dr Greg Wilson

Greg Wilson is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at The Christie in Manchester, UK. His interests are Breast, Colorectal Cancer, and targeted liver therapies. He is a Lead Clinician for Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) for the targeted liver tumour programme at The Christie.  Greg is closely involved in the breast and colorectal research programmes and he is principal investigator in national and international trials.
Greg is also an educational supervisor within the junior doctor programme and a lecturer in the teaching programmes through the University of Manchester.

Kate is the newsletter editor for EONS. She also runs the EONS Twitter account at @cancernurseeu and the EONS Facebook page. EONS is experimenting to see whether social media can be a useful tool for its core work promoting cancer nursing throughout Europe. Kate lives in Oxfordshire and enjoys cycling, cooking and talking too much on Twitter!


More on the Committee:

In preparation for the Congress in Amsterdam, we have been looking to further strengthen our online and social media presence in order to generate interest, increase and lead the important discussions online. In order to reach every member of the oncology community on all the different platforms, we look for advice and input, from those already on these platforms.

We have a 5 000 strong online community on LinkedIn, a Twitter following of over 1 600 and an ever increasing fan base on Facebook.

For the Amsterdam conference our Twitter presence will be maximised with five lecture rooms each getting a single hashtag throughout the conference to follow certain tracks, along with the general conference hashtag #ECC2013. Linkedin will be a platform to discuss various hot topics from the day, and Facebook will be a combination of both.

The social media committee members will:

  • Share thoughts and discussions prior to conference with peers through our platforms (generating discussions on individual platforms). This could also lead to promoting their institute’s campaigns
  • Lead debates on our platforms
  • Be a social media role model to other oncologists
  • Reputation building within our strong online community
